Zen Shiatsu
Zen Shiatsu Massage Therapy
Zen Shiatsu, also called Masunaga Therapy, is a form of Meridian Shiatsu. Namely, it utilises the same meridian lines as Traditional Chinese Medicine and prefaces a return to Chinese Taoist practices within the context of Japanese Shiatsu. This style is markedly different in its approach; Zen practitioners include the use of fists, elbows and knees, along with the use thumbs and palms, as typically the case of other types of Shiatsu. By including the body’s Energetic Meridians, instead of only focusing on the anatomical or physiological body, Zen Shiatsu treats the body as a whole system, rather than isolating only the muscle and tissue from the human. By using pressure and stretching, it is said that Zen Shiatsu can achieve systemic change in the body, although there is no currently no scientific evidence proving that any form of Shiatsu can treat disease.
Working from the hara (belly), which is understood as the body’s energy centre, and using perpendicular pressure, Zen Shiatsu is believed to nourish weak kyo areas and disperses excess jitsu areas to better feel the flow of qi (life force).
